Mr. Halkett knows nothing of any regular tariff formed, as the de Meurons say, by the late Earl of Selkirk, to regulate the prices of goods and grain in the colony.

. . . the De Meurons, a regiment of Swiss and German mercenaries raised during the Napoleonic Wars. They were taken to Canada during the Anglo-American War of 1812, and were disbanded in 1816. Lord Selkirk took 140 of them for his [Red River] colony in 1818.
